Things To Do In Sydney

Aww, come on... you can do just about anything in this city. However, if you're at a loose end and you want to do something active, here are a few things I have done or will be doing shortly...

Climb The Harbour Bridge: Yep, it's finally available for humble folks like you and me at see what the view is like from the top of Sydney's harbour bridge. Top of the world, Ma!
Web: http://www.bridgeclimb.com
Address: 5 Cumberland St, Sydney 2000.
If you can't get a booking soon enough, just go for a walk across the ocean-side of the bridge. Head over to Milson's Point, then wander back and down the bridge stairs in the Rocks for a crocodile/kangeroo/emu pizza and a beer at the Australian Hotel (corner of Gloucester St. and Cumberland St.).

Spit Bridge To Manly Walk: If you fancy a relaxed walk, this is 3 hours of excellent and varied scenery (you can take all day if you like). Take a water bottle and comfortable shoes (and a pair of togs and towel if you get tempted to take a dip along the way). You can go from Manly to the Spit bridge, but its far nicer to finish in Manly for lunch or dinner.
Spit Bridge Parking: There's a car park on the Beauty Head side of the bridge, or there are side-streets just as you cross into Seaforth.

Indoor Rock Climbing: These places get me over my fear of heights! Far more fun than just going to a gym and lifting weights or jiggling about. I used to head over to the Climb-Fit center in St. Leonards when I lived nearby. Its pretty big inside with plenty of variety for beginners or muscle-bound heroes.
Phone: (02) 9436 4600
Address: 4/12 Frederick St, St. Leonards.

If that's not an option, you can try the indoor climbing center in Summer Hill (near Alexandria). It is a bit smaller than the one in St. Leonards, but very handy if you live in the surrounding area and it has a lot of interesting climbs that get changed regularly.
Web: http://www.indoorclimbing.com.au
Address: 59 Liverpool Road, Summer Hill.

Outdoor Rock Climbing: An alternative (free) alternative to the indoor stuff, this is quite a bit of fun. At least it gets you out in the open. There are more locations than I can possibly list here, but I'll jot down a few.
Lindfield Rocks: Corner of Archibald Road and Tyron Road (walk past the tennis courts). Ideal for the climber who couldn't afford rope - the walls here aren't too high and they are perfect for practising your bouldering technique.
Hornsby: Near the sports oval at the end of Cliff Ave. Some great top roping places here. Some reasonable bouldering spots further down the track.

Pooter Around A National Park: From the panoramas of West Head Point to the hang-gliders and motorbikers at Stanwell Tops to the picnic areas at Glenmore National park, take a hamper and relax under the sun for a while.

Go Canyoning: A favourite pastime. I could write a heap about this, but someone has already done a much better job here.

Take Flight: I have flown fixed-wing gliders a number of times and I loved every second of it, but I've never tried hang-gliding. A shame, really, because just at the South of Sydney is Stanwell Tops which offers some of the best hang-gliding conditions in the world. If you wanted to give it a go, you could try Hangglide Oz:
Web: http://www.hangglideoz.com.au/

Or there is the the Sydney Hang Gliding Center:
Web: http://www.hanggliding.com.au/

Or if you want to try the fixed-wing kind of gliding, there's the Southern Cross Gliding Club:

Live Music: Here's a couple of venues that make for a really good concert:

  • The Metro Theatre - A wonderfully intimate venue. Well laid out and just made for bands to play in
  • The Enmore Theatre - A larger venue than the Metro, this place is amazing. We're still waiting for their website to go live, though...

Sit On Your Arse: A bit of a cop out, but I had to have a link to the TV guide somewhere on these pages.

Not Satisfied? This list is just some of the things that I have enjoyed but that doesn't mean it's your cup of tea. I'm just a bloke who updates a web page every so often but there are web sites that make a living out of telling you what's on in Sydney:

  • Sydney CitySearch - A pretty comprehensive list of things that are happening now and in the future
