At the time of writing, the following programs were all free for personal use and (in my honest opinion) extremely useful:- PSPad - The best free text editor I have seen
- IrfanView - An amazingly useful image viewer with lots of options to manipulate images
- Free Hex Editor - Not everyone needs one, but this is the best I have found
- CDValet - Unobstructive CD player that works well with CDDB and FreeDB
- Firefox - A brilliant web browser/e-mail client/newsreader/chat program
- Ad-aware - A very useful little utility to remove spyware from your machine
